 January 2026 Virtual Technical Seminar:

"Beyond Legionella: Other Opportunistic Premise Plumbing Pathogens (OPPPs)"

Dr. Abraham Cullom: Director of Water Safety & Management, Pace Analytical

Thursday, January 22nd, 2026: 12 - 1 PM

Presented via Zoom

Opportunistic premise plumbing pathogens (OPPPs) are a functionally and taxonomically diverse group of organisms. There has been great progress in addressing one of them (Legionella), while the disease burdens of other OPPPs, such as nontuberculous mycobacteria and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, are seldom discussed or addressed in water management plans or policies.

For our January 2026 meeting, this presentation will introduce the importance of other OPPPs in water safety; specific OPPPs, pertinent regulations, and corrective measures will be discussed. This presentation will also lay the groundwork for a realistic understanding of drinking water microbiology and where OPPPs fit into that picture. From there, it will explore the other OPPPs that industrial hygienists and water managers ought to be aware of, their relationship with building water systems, infection routes, outcomes, and distinctions from Legionella. Corrective measures, standards, and regulations to be considered with these pathogens will be described, as well as how these considerations ought to differ from those associated with Legionella.

Dr. Abraham Cullom is the Director of Water Safety & Management at Pace Analytical, where he oversees a group that addresses waterborne pathogens through risk assessments, water management plans, and outbreak investigations. His primary interests are building plumbing microbiology and potable-water chemistry, namely how treatment, pipe materials, and hydraulics influence biological water quality. This broad view of building water systems informs his view that, while Legionella is important (and interesting), it's time we talked about some other bugs.

This virtual technical seminar will be presented via Zoom, and pre-registration is required.
